Matt Mills reveals his delight after playing his part in the win over Watford
Matt Mills is targeting more goals and more points after helping Wanderers return to winning ways against Watford at the weekend.
The central defender, who was recalled to the starting line-up after missing out at Hull City two weeks ago, notched his first in Bolton colours, setting the Whites on their way to a 2-1 win with the deadlock breaking goal inside the first four minutes.
Throughout his career to date, Mills has a respectable return from defence, netting 16 from 229 matches – a rate of one goal every 14 matches.
And the former Reading and Leicester man is confident that more goals will follow now that he is off the mark.
Mills said: “I think you could see by my celebration that the goal meant a lot to me, but more importantly was the three points which moves the football club in the right direction.
“Chris (Eagles) has been on fire with his deliveries and so it was a case of getting on the end of the cross. Luckily it went into the back of the net.
“I scored a similar one last week in the behind-closed-doors game and I kind of said to Chris ‘same again, please’.
“Goal scoring has been a part of my career and I definitely want to bring that to my game at Bolton because every goal is vital in getting the club towards where it wants to be.”
Despite enjoying Saturday’s win, Mills also explained that the result must now be parked and attention firmly switched to Tuesday’s game at Birmingham where Bolton are aiming to pick up their first away points this campaign.
He added: “We now have two massive away games. If we can get maximum points then fantastic as it would put us in a great position.
“The most important thing on Saturday was that we showed our best with the ball and our best without it.
“We stood up and were counted in the second half and we will need to take that into our away fixtures. Sometimes it’s not pretty but if we get three points every week, I’ll certainly be happy.
“Birmingham are a good side – if you look at their squad there is a lot of Premier League experience, let alone Championship. It will be a tough test and we have to be ready for when we go again.”
