Mark Davies reflects on what he describes as Bolton's 'best performance of the season'
Mark Davies was happy to play a key role in what he described as the side’s ‘best performance of the season’ in Saturday’s win at Sheffield Wednesday.
The 24-year-old crashed home a stunning winner at Hillsborough, just moments after the hosts had levelled the scores from the penalty spot midway through the second period.
Davies was deployed in an unfamiliar role on the right side of a midfield four, though on countless occasions assumed possession of the ball before setting numerous Bolton attacks in motion.
“I thought we were on top for most of the game,” he told the club’s official website after game. “Their penalty came against the run of play really.
“Before the game the gaffer just told me to play on the right and go and get as much of the ball as I could. I enjoyed playing in the position to be fair, because it allows me to have more freedom.
“Prior to the penalty, I didn’t feel that at any point in the game we were going to concede because they never really put us under any constant pressure.
“I think that things are starting to fall into place and that soon we’ll score a load of goals at once. We were disappointed not to pick up any points at Birmingham and the lads were all determined to bounce back and we did that today.
“I think that we looked a lot stronger as an entire unit. We’ve shown we’re a good side in spells throughout the season, but today we did it for the entire game.
“Over the 90 minutes I’d probably say it was our best performance of the season.”
Davies’ 65th minute strike, his eighth for the club, came after he galloped forward into space before letting fly with a left-footed drive that arced away from goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and into the top corner.
He later explained: “The skipper did well to lay the ball to me. I then looked up and saw some space and thought ‘I’ll have a little dribble and see where I go’. Then I was about 15 or 20 yards from goal and just shot with my left foot.
“I never seem to score with my stronger right foot!
“We had great number of fans with us and they really made themselves heard throughout. A few of the lads were saying in the dressing room after the match how loud they were.”
