Dougie Freedman's reaction to the 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the Reebok Stadium
Dougie Freedman believes his side’s spirit and commitment was decisive in the recent 2-1 win over Middlesbrough at the Reebok Stadium.
Wanderers have now won eight consecutive games on their own patch and now sit in the final play-off spot in the npower Championship.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Freedman said: “It was a very good, spirited performance. That’s what we’ve got on our side at the moment. We’ve got the spirit and commitment and that’s something you can’t buy, that has to be developed.
“Today Medo’s job was to win the ball back. It was from him closing down and winning the ball for us that led to the penalty.
“The players understand their roles and know exactly what they have to do right now.
“We knew exactly the threats that Middlesbrough posed, that they would come at us down the wings with speed and would look to pass and move the ball in the midfield areas. Not only did we counter that successfully, but we pushed forward and caused problems of our own.
“We’re playing very consistently right now and are hitting the form at the right time.
“The intent and closing down from the players was outstanding. We pressed the ball exceptionally well and made it hard for Middlesbrough.
“When Middlesbrough were reduced to ten men we were professional in our approach to the game and in the end were deserved winners.
“I wrote in my programme notes about how important the fans were going to be. The atmosphere today was absolutely spot on.
“We’ve got an away game now before we’re back at the Reebok and we’ll need them with again for the game against Blackpool.”
