Defender calls for more of the same as Wanderers maintain 100% start to the season
David Wheater shared his delight after Bolton Wanderers beat Bristol Rovers to move top of the Sky Bet League One table on Wednesday night.
Backed by 700 travelling Whites at the Memorial Stadium, goals from Josh Vela and Jay Spearing saw Bolton claim back-to-back away victories and their third successive win.
Ending Bristol Rovers’ nine-month unbeaten home run in the process, Wheater has now called for more of the same against Fleetwood Town as Wanderers look on extend their current run.
“It’s a great feeling and it’s what we wanted at the start of the season,” the defender told bwfc.co.uk after the final whistle. “We’ve started well and now we just need to keep it going.
“We’ve shown this season that if we go behind or concede that we stick together. Sometimes over the last couple of seasons we haven’t done that but we’ve got a better attitude this season.
“We just need to take it one game at time. We’ve got a big game on Saturday now and it’d be perfect if we can win again and make it four out of four.”
Wheater continued: “It’s brilliant that we can get goals from anywhere as well. We’re showing that we don’t have to just rely on the strikers.
“They’re causing carnage upfront, but if they are not getting the goals then the other lads are filling in for them.
“Jay’s leading goalscorer now and hopefully Josh will get many more because he’s a top player and he can go far in the game.
“The fans have been tremendous as well, but they’ve always been like that during my time with the club, even when things haven’t been going too well.
“They always come and support us. It’s a team effort and we are doing well. Hopefully we can all keep it going.”
