David Lee’s side returned to winning ways on Monday night against their Sheffield Wednesday counterparts.
An experienced Bolton side containing the likes of Josh Cullen, Adam Le Fondre and Antonee Robinson took to the field at Macron Stadium in front of Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff. It was clear from the opening whistle that Wanderers would control the game and dictate proceedings.
A succession of Ryan White corners caused trouble for Wednesday with Liam Edwards placing his header over the bar from one of White’s set pieces. To their credit, the visitors weren’t intimidated by the strong Bolton side, Preslav Borukov saw his header blocked at close range by Dorian Dervite.
It wasn’t long however before Lee’s side took the lead. Just five minutes into the game Le Fondre forced a save from Cameron Dawson before White rattled the post. Jeff King was there to collect the rebound before he was fouled by Liam Williams.
Le Fondre stepped up to take the penalty to give the hosts the lead.
The dominance continued and a second goal shortly followed from Jeff King. After Reece Burke played a perfectly weighted pass into the midfielder, King showed great composure and quick feet to create space before finding the back of the net.
Sheffield Wednesday soon found their way back into the game just 10 minutes before half-time. Penney’s corner deflecting into the back of the net via Antonee Robinson.
In truth, Bolton controlled the second-half having the majority of possession. The game was sealed five minutes from time after Connor Hall converted the second penalty of the game.
