Foot in Both Camps: Brentford v Bolton Wanderers

With Wanderers taking on Brentford this weekend, bwfc.co.uk take a look at players who have turned out for both sides involved in the fixture.

Keith Branagan

The Irish international spent eight years at Burnden Park between 1992 and 2000 making 214 apperances for the club.

During his time at Wanderers, he achieved three promotions, playing two seasons in the Premier League and at Wembley for the 1995 League Cup Final.

Since retirement due to a shoulder injury, Branagan has qualified as a UEFA ‘A’ licence and has coached the goalkeepers at Crewe and Stockport before returning to the area to coach at Bolton School.

Since 2012, he has also coached the youth goalkeepers here at the University of Bolton Stadium.

The shot-stopper spent half a season at Brentford on loan meanwhile, making just three appearances for the London club.

Peter Deakin

Deakin started his 13-year career at Wanderers, staying with the club from 1957 until 1964.

The attacking midfielder made only 63 appearances for the Trotters in his time for the club and joined Peterborough when he left.

His career finished at Brentford where he made 10 appearances in his final season in the game.

Les Ferdinand MBE

The striker spent one season with the Wanderers in 2004/05, making 12 appearances for the club.

Ferdinand's only league goal for Wanderers was a 90th minute strike against Manchester United that looked to have secured all three points, but an even later goal from the Red Devils ensured that the points were shared.

The former Tottenham man spent three games on loan at Brentford during the 1987/88 season, when he was at QPR.

Jamie Fullarton

Current Halifax manager Fullarton spent a season at Brentford, making 37 appearances and scoring just one goal on his debut against Huddersfield Town.

He made just one appearance for Bolton in the month he spent at the club. That was a 0-0 away draw with Oxford in April 1999.

Chris Long

Long has featured on loan for both sides, firstly playing 10 games for Brentford in 2015, scoring four goals.

He signed for Phil Parkinson’s men in January 2017 for the rest of the season, scoring on his home debut in a 4-1 win against Walsall - a strike which turned out to be his only goal of his 10-game spell at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Gerry Peyton

Another player to have brief loan spells at both sides is goalkeeper Peyton, but he appeared just the once for Wanderers in the 1991/92 season on loan from Everton.

The Irishman then joined Brentford on loan later in 1992, appearing 14 times for them between the sticks.

The 62-year-old is now out of a job after being Arsene Wenger’s goalkeeping coach at Arsenal since 2003. He left Arsenal with Wenger in the summer.

Bill McAdams

Northern Irish international signed for Wanderers from Manchester City in 1960 and it was hoped that he would be the successor to Nat Lofthouse.

He scored 18 goals in 27 appearances at Burnden Park, before being bought by Don Revie’s Leeds after just one season.

Again, staying at Elland Road for only a season, he moved to Brentford in 1962, winning the Fourth Division title in his first season.

He featured for the Bees 75 times, finding the back of the net 36 times.

Darren Pratley

Coming through the ranks at Fulham, Pratley was sent out on loan to Griffin Park for two consecutive seasons, playing 50 league games for Brentford.

He signed for Swansea meanwhile where he joined Wanderers on a free transfer in the summer of 2011.

Making his debut in the season the Whites were relegated from the Premier League, Pratley stayed with the club into the Championship and League One.

He was appointed captain by Neil Lennon at the start of the 2015/16 season meanwhile before being released at the end of last season when his contract expired.

Isaiah Rankin

The striker joined Wanderers in the summer of 2000 on loan from then Premier League outfit Bradford City.

He made 18 appearances in his three months at the University of Bolton Stadium, finding the back of the net twice.

After returning to his parent club, he signed for Barnsley and then Grimsby before Brentford secured his signature in May 2004 on a free transfer

He made 97 appearances in two seasons for the League One side, most memorably scoring against Premier League Southampton in the FA Cup.

John Salako

England international Salako signed on loan for Colin Todd’s side for the last two months of the 1998 season, however he failed to make an impact, with only seven appearances off the bench.

He ended his career at Brentford, playing in the same side as Rankin at Griffin Park. He made 45 appearances in his final season, retiring in May 2005.

Salako is now a regular match reporter on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday programme.

Ricky Shakes

Starting his career at Bolton, Shakes only made two appearances for the club in the cup.

His only goal meanwhile was an equaliser in a FA Cup replay against Tranmere, taking the match into extra time. Wanderers went on to lose the game 2-1.

Playing one season for Brentford, the Guyanan international scored four goals, two of those being in consecutive games in his first two appearances for the club.

The 33-year-old is now plying his trade in the National League, where he is running the midfield for Boreham Wood.

Cleveland Taylor

Taylor’s chances at the University of Bolton stadium were also limited, with him making two FA Cup substitute appearances for the Whites between 2000 and 2004.

He signed for Brentford for an undisclosed fee in 2009, becoming Andy Scott's 12th signing of the summer.

However, he made 12 appearances for the Bees before being sent on loan to Burton in the January. He was released at the end of the season and signed for SPL side St. Johnstone.

Scott Taylor

Signing for Wanderers in 1996 for £150,000, the striker failed to break into the side, scoring just three goals in his 17 appearances for the club.

However, one of these goals came in the memorable 6-1 League Cup win over Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

He left the University of Bolton Stadium in 1998, signing for Tranmere for £350,000.

The Englishman spent a month at Griffin Park on loan from MK Dons, making six appearances in his spell in 2007.
