Bolton Wanderers are pleased to confirm the signing of Jan Kirchhoff on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
The 27-year-old was last on the books of Sunderland, departing the club at the end of last season having made 23 appearances for the Black Cats during his 18 months at the Stadium of Light.
Comfortable playing at both centre-back and centre-midfield, the former Germany Under-21s international started his senior career with 1. FSV Mainz 05 and made his professional debut in the 2008/09 season as they won promotion to the Bundesliga.
Joining German giants Bayern Munich on a free transfer ahead of the 2013/14 season, Kirchhoff made 11 appearances during his first year at the Allianz Arena as he helped Bayern win the Bundesliga, the FIFA Club World Cup and the DFB-Pokal.
After signing for FC Schalke 04 on an 18-month loan deal in December 2013, he returned to Bayern before moving to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee in January 2016.
Helping the Black Cats avoid relegation in his first half-season with the club, Kirchhoff’s performances also saw him voted PFA Fans' Player of the Month for April 2016.
And having impressed while on trial at Macron Stadium, Kirchhoff has joined the Whites until the end of the season.
Speaking to bwfc.co.uk after completing the move, Kirchhoff said: “I’m really pleased to be here and happy to be back in football.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and to play for this great team.”
Trotters manager Phil Parkinson added: “Jan is a player of excellent pedigree and will be an excellent addition to the squad as we head towards the final months of the campaign.”
