Preview: Bolton Wanderers vs. Middlesbrough

With Wanderers taking on Middlesbrough this evening in a Sky Bet Championship clash, bwfc.co.uk take a look at five talking points to take into the game.

  1. Squad Update

Speaking to bwfc.co.uk prior to the clash, manager Phil Parkinson also gave the following update regarding the condition of his squad.

Parkinson said: ‘Gary O’Neil saw the doctor this morning, after he was hit with a stomach bug that forced him off at the weekend, and we are monitoring him'

‘It is a shame, as he has played so well for us recently and been one of our best players.’

‘Obviously, he can only play if he is right and we will leave that decision closer to the kick off.’

  1. Game to Remember Bolton Wanderers 4-1 Middlesbrough - 23.04.94 – John McGinlay x3 & Scott Green

We take you back to April 1994, when Bruce Rioch welcomed Lennie Lawrence’s Middlesbrough side to Burnden Park in a First Division clash.

Initially the visiting side took the lead, as a Paul Wilkinson free kick opened the scoring.

However, a John McGinlay hat-trick with a Scott Green solo finish capped off a superb comeback, as Wanderers defeated Boro 4-1.

  1. New Faces in the North-East

Since the last time we faced the team from the North-East, there have been some notable arrivals at the club.

A major signing made towards the end of the January transfer window was John Obi Mikel, as the defensive midfielder joined on a free transfer from Tianjin TEDA.

The Nigerian international has won it all domestically during his time at Chelsea, with a UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and two Premier League winners’ medals to boast, among other notable achievements.

Since arriving at Boro, he has played 13 times and become a mainstay in the side.

Coming in on loan to bolster the midfield is Rajiv van La Parra, who joined from Huddersfield Town until the end of this season.

Back in the 2016/17 campaign playing for the Terriers, van La Parra played a pivotal part in gaining promotion via the play-offs under David Wagner.

He played the entirety of the Final at Wembley, as Huddersfield won on penalties.

  1. Opponent’s recent form

When looking to Middlesbrough’s current form, they have not won a Sky Bet Championship game in their last seven games.

Their previous away game was a defeat to Swansea City, where they lost 3-1 at the Liberty Stadium.

They currently sit eighth in the division, only four points out of the play-off places.

When looking to their away record in the last five games, Boro have taken just four points from their last five away games.

On their travels, they last recorded a win against Blackburn Rovers in February 2019, with a Britt Assombalonga goal being the difference for Tony Pulis’ side.
