Foot in Both Camps: Bolton Wanderers v Walsall

With Walsall coming to the University of Bolton Stadium in a FA Cup Third Round clash, bwfc.co.uk took a look at players who have played for both teams involved

Michael Ricketts

The former England international started his professional career at Walsall in 1996, going on to make over 75 appearances for the Saddler before joining Wanderers in July 2000.

Following signing for the Whites for a reported £400,000, he hit the ground running for Sam Allardyce’s men by scoring 24 goals as Wanderers gained promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

His goal scoring form continued into the top flight of English football, which saw Ricketts earn an England call up.

He made his international debut against Holland, playing 45 minutes for his country.

Erhun Oztumer

Nicknamed ‘Turkish Messi’, the playmaking midfielder spent two years at the Saddlers, joining from Peterborough United in June 2016.

He scored on his debut against AFC Wimbledon in August of that season, scoring 15 goals in 41 league games.

The following season, he finished at Walsall’s top goal scorer with 17 goals in all competitions before joining Bolton in June 2018.

Making his debut for the Whites against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup in August, slotting home Wanderers only goal in a 2-1 defeat.

Chris Thompson

The midfielder came through the youth academy at Bolton before making his first team debut against Peterborough United in the League Cup in 1977.

He scored 20 goals in 81 appearances for Wanderers before being transferred to Blackburn Rovers in 1983.

Fast forward to 1991 and Thompson made three appearances for Walsall before retiring from the professional football aged 31.

Thompson tragically died aged 52 in his home in June 2012.

Keith Andrews

In 2004, the former Republic of Ireland international was sent on loan to Walsall from his parent club at the time, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He scored two goals against Millwall and Ipswich Town for the Saddlers during his short loan spell at the League One club.

Following on from this and Andrews moved to Bolton Wanderers from West Bromwich Albion in June 2012 on a three-year deal.

With appearances and five goals to his name during his three years at the University of Bolton Stadium, Andrews finished his career at Milton Keynes Dons on loan.

Tom Barber

Playing in the early 1900s, the half back spent five years with Wanderers (1907 to 1912), scoring 14 goals in 107 appearances.

He was a member of the Bolton team that won promotion to the First Division on two separate occasions in 1908/09 and 1910/11.

Heading forward to 1921 and Barber had a short spell at the Saddlers in 1921.

Alan Boswell

Beginning his career in 1961 at Walsall, Boswell spent two years with the club whilst they played in the Second Division.

Following on from this, Boswell had a long stay at Shrewsbury Town, with a season at Wolverhampton Wanderers in between his tenures at the Shrews and Bolton.

The goalkeeper spent two years in Lancashire with Bolton (1969 to 1971), playing regularly in the Second Division under a mixture of managers.

Terry Wharton

A long serving Wolverhampton Wanderers player, Wharton had a short spell at Los Angeles Wolves in the USA before returning to England to play for Bolton in 1968.

He signed for a record fee of £70,000, replacing Francis Lee who had been sold to Manchester City.

With 110 appearances and 30 goals in his time at Bolton, Wharton left to join Crystal Palace in 1970.

With a season in South Africa in the middle of his time in England, Wharton joined the Saddlers for the 1973/74 season before ending his career at Kidderminster Harriers.
