Finlay Lockett notched up his fourth goal of the campaign to help Bolton Wanderers edge past Doncaster Rovers and finish top of group D in the Youth Alliance Cup.
The young Wanderers dug in deep to claim victory despite never really being tested by the opposition.
The goal came from good work by Rio McEvoy followed some nice footwork by Lockett before cutting in and finishing with a shot off the post.
The first half was fairly quiet with very few chances to show for either side though Lockett and Ryan Colvin both had their name taken by the referee.
Early in the second half Regan Riley appeared to take a knock and was replaced by Kian Le Fondre while Arran Pettifer was the third Wanderer to be shown a yellow.
With just over ten minutes of the game remaining Lamine Toure came on for Mitch Henry as Wanderers saw the game out.
The Whites were unlucky not to increase their lead in stoppage time when McEvoy had a goal ruled out for offside before Lockett had a one on one saved by the Rovers keeper to deny him a brace.
The quarter finals are due to take place on the 16th January next year.
