Sam Hird said it was a "massive opportunity" for him, as he steps into the world of coaching in Ian Evatt's backroom staff.
The former Barrow defender hung up his boots midway through last season, where he spent two years at Holker Street and played in 65 games for the Bluebirds.
"I am really pleased. It is a massive opportunity for me in the next stage of my career," Hird said.
"Going on to the staff at Barrow, it helped me. Being with Rob Kelly, assisting him and keeping Barrow in the league was a good learning curve."
"Now, to be given this opportunity so soon in my coaching career, is huge. It is a big club, great facilities and big fan base."
