Match-winner Dion Charles dedicated his first goal in a Wanderers’ shirt to his newborn baby girl after a whirlwind 48 hours.
Charles became a dad for the second time when daughter Hattie was born on Thursday evening.
And he celebrated the new arrival in spectacular style with the late strike that gave the Whites a dramatic 1-0 win at Shrewsbury Town.
“That goal just topped off a brilliant week for me and my family. I’m absolutely delighted,” said Charles.
“I can’t wait to get home and see them and tell them what a goal I scored.
“I had a great angle on it and I just knew as soon as it left my foot it was a goal and I just ran off into the crowd and celebrated with them.
“That’s why you play football. You want moments like that – last minute winners and things like that so it was very special for me.
“As a striker you want to score goals and once one goes in hopefully the floodgates open.
“That was a special one today.”
Charles completed his first 90 minutes since his arrival from Accrington Stanley at the start of the month as Wanderers ended their seven-match losing away run thanks to the striker’s thumping volley a minute from the end.
The 26-year-old’s stunning finish also secured successive wins for Ian Evatt’s men and cemented his relationship with the fans, who engulfed Charles and his team-mates as they ended the Shrews’ seven-match unbeaten home run to move up to 15th place in the table.
“You could see how much it meant to the boys and the fans – that goal,” Charles added.
“It was a great strike but to a man – the subs that came on and the boys that started – everyone worked their socks off for one another.
“That’s the minimum we need to be at this football club and the results will come.
“We’ve got such talented squad and everyone wants to play and if we keep putting in performances like that we won’t be far off.
“The results haven’t been the best of late but we’ve turned the corner
“Everyone is working hard and the results are coming now.
“It just shows how much it means to them (the fans) when we’re playing like we are and scoring the goals we are - and long may they continue being like that with us.”
