A youthful Wanderers’ reserve side bowed out of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup as Burnley struck three late goals to reach the semi-finals.
The Whites’ side was made up completely of scholars but they gave as good as they got until Burnley struck three times in the last 20 minutes to set up a last-four tie against Blackpool.
Wanderers should have led at the break after having the best of the first-half chances.
But Sam Olawumi was unable to slot past Lukas Jensen early on and the former Wanderers’ loan keeper then denied both Max Conway and Danny Jones to keep the score level at half-time.
The Clarets – fielding a side that regularly features at Premier League 2 level – began to make their presence felt after the interval.
But Wanderers held out until Dara Costelloe rifled a shot into the top corner with 70 minutes to go.
England youth international Lewis Richardson, who recently signed a new contract at Turf Moor as part of Burnley’s first-team squad, then finished well to make it 2-0.
And an 82nd-minute strike from Costelloe then wrapped up victory for the Clarets as they ended Wanderers’ interest in the competition.
