All at Wanderers are sorry to hear of the passing of former goalkeeper Alex Smith at the age of 85.
Smith spent five years as a player at Burnden Park after joining the Whites in 1962 following the demise of Accrington Stanley.
As a meticulous trainer, the Lancaster-born keeper was a valued member of the squad under FA Cup-winning manager Bill Ridding but as under-study to Wanderers’ record-appearance maker and England international Eddie Hopkinson played just 20 games for the Whites.
He then moved on to Halifax Town, where he played over 350 times, before ending his career with Preston North End.
Smith returned to Wanderers to work with some of the club’s young goalkeepers in the Academy, as well as running a successful retail bed business in Derby Street in the town.
The thoughts of everyone at Wanderers are with his family and friends.
