Wanderers suffered a first competitive defeat of their season as a more experienced Mansfield line-up took the points in their Central League encounter.
The Stags featured a number of players with first-team experience, including all three of their goalscorers.
Wanderers' Harry Leigh had the first opportunity of the game on 13 minutes with an effort from outside the area which Mansfield keeper Owen Mason was equal to.
Just a minute later the hosts took the lead through Ben Quinn who pounced upon some slack defending to put his side one up.
Quinn was in again shortly afterwards but this time blazed an effort over the bar. But Mansfield would add to their lead on 23 minutes when Calum Macdonald was played through on the right and found the bottom corner, squeezing it past the outstretched arm of Jack Dallimore (pictured).
Wanderers were forced into an early change when Conor Lewis replaced Harrison Fleury after just ten minutes, with the midfielder suffering from a dead leg, and five minutes before the break Lewis tried his luck from outside the area with a shot saved by Owen Mason.
The Whites conceded a third after 63 minutes when Tom Nichols latched onto a ball in the Wanderers' area and took a touch before turning and shooting past Dallimore to extend the hosts' lead.
The Wanderers' keeper denied Town a fourth late on with a superb save to tip Taylor Anderson's long range effort over the bar.
Against strong opposition on a testing afternoon, Andy Taylor's young side will no doubt have learned plenty as they now look forward to a training-ground friendly at Manchester United and their next run of fixtures.
