Mark Isong's second half strike turned out to be the difference between the two sides as Wanderers B Team recorded an impressive victory over Derby County.
Andy Taylor's men were helped at closing the game out once gaining the lead, with Derby playing out the final ten minutes with ten men following a red card.
The first half was one of few chances, the first falling to Sean Hogan on 17 minutes following a Wanderers free-kick. The ball bobbled around inside the penalty area and fell to the Whites defender, but failed to put his effort on target.
Harley Irwin came closest to an opener in the first half - where Wanderers had numerous chances to put the ball in the net - following a goal line scramble. Irwin thought he had scored from close range but a great save from Derby's Harry Evans kept the score line level at the break.
Irwin was at it again five minutes into the second half as he looked to break the deadlock but his effort from outside the area was snatched at and did not trouble the Derby goal.
Derby had a good spell around the hour mark, Lennon Wheeldon had a tame effort from close range that rolled into the hands of Joel Coleman before Darren Robinson had a strike that just went past the Wanderers net from outside the box.
But on 73 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken with a moment of quality from Andy Taylor's men.
Isong, on the left side of the area cut inside onto his right foot and curled the ball past Evans into the opposite corner to give Wanderers the lead.
Derby were dealt a blow in the 81st minute when substitute David Abimbola was just too strong for Jack Perry who took the ball away from him and raced away on goal. The Derby defender failed to keep up and fouled the Wanderers striker with a pull of the shirt, and was subsequently sent off.
With the red card in their favour and with a man advantage, Wanderers were able to close the game out and claim an impressive victory.
Wanderers B Team Head Coach Andy Taylor: "I do say that results aren't the be all and end all with us however, we want to win games, we want to go into every game and win it.
"Today was a big test they're a category one academy - I showed the lads before the game the record that they've (Derby) got in the league, I think they've played four and won four only conceding one goal so there was the challenge for them straight away and to be fair they rose to it.
"I thought he (Isong) was really good in general," explained Taylor. "I thought his work out of possession was really unselfish and he got his reward.
"It fell to him in the box and he showed that composure, showed that quality to curl it in the far corner it was a brilliant finish and well deserved. I think we had other moments where we could have punished them more."
