Big Finish For Whites' Duo

Sheehan and Charles internationals

Two of the Wanderers’ squad enjoyed big finishes to the international programme before heading back to join in the build-up to Saturday’s home game against Burton Albion.

Midfielder Josh Sheehan was named player of the match for his outstanding performance for Wales in their 1-0 win over Montenegro.

And striker Dion Charles then played a key role as Northern Ireland scored five times in a game for the first time since 1995.

Charles created the opening goal of the night for hat-trick hero Isaac Price, as well as having an effort of his own disallowed, in a 5-0 win over Bulgaria at Windsor Park.

And the Whites’ frontman was a real threat all night as Michael O’Neil’s side – captained by ex-Wanderers’ loanee Conor Bradley  – followed up a goalless draw in Belarus with the victory that put them top of their group in the Nations League.

Wanderers’ team-mate Eoin Toal helped Northern Ireland keep a fourth clean sheet in seven games against Belarus in Hungary before being replaced at half-time in the win over Bulgaria, when Whites’ goalkeeper Luke Southwood was again among the substitutes.

Wales are also still in with a chance of winning promotion from their section of the Nations League after continuing their impressive start under recently appointed manager Craig Bellamy.

The Dragons followed up a 2-2 draw in Iceland last weekend with the solid win over Montenegro in Cardiff where Sheehan was named star man.

The play-maker completed the full 90 minutes on his first competitive start for his country and was hugely influential as Wales stretched their unbeaten run to four games.

Elsewhere, Szabolcs Schön was unable to add to his eight caps for Hungary after being an unused substitute in his country’s two Nations League fixtures, which brought a win and a draw.

But the Wanderers’ wing-back put himself back in the international picture with his early season-form for Wanderers’ earning him a place in the Hungary squad for the first time since 2021.
