Charles | I Always Want To Go One Better

Charles celebration Adeboyejo

Dion Charles has set his sights on another goal-laden season after firing Wanderers to their third straight win to start the campaign, writes Pete Oliver.

Charles struck with two unerring first-half finishes to set up the Whites’ 3-0 victory at Cheltenham Town as they matched their result from the opening day of the League One campaign.

The Northern Ireland international netted 23 times last season for club and country as the first Wanderers' player to reach the 20-goal mark for over two decades and wants even more this time around.

“I’m happy with the two goals. I’ve got a target for the season. I’ve started better than I did last year, so hopefully that continues,” said Charles, who scored once in the first four games of last term.

“I always want to go one better, so if I can score 25 I’ll be happy. It wasn’t the first season I’ve scored 20, so hopefully I can go back-to-back.

“It’s good this time of season when you’ve got a game every few days so as a striker you’re hungry for more goals.”

Cheltenham couldn’t deal with the twin threat of Charles and Victor Adeboyejo as Wanderers put themselves out of sight by half-time with another dominant performance.

And Ian Evatt’s men are now one of four teams in the division with maximum points as they prepare for back-to-back home games against Lancashire neighbours Fleetwood Town and Wigan Athletic.

“I’m always happy to get off the mark early with a couple of goals but it was a great team performance,” added Charles.

“I enjoy playing with any of the strikers at this club. They’re all brilliant at individual things. It’s just whatever the gaffer picks for the day. We’re all a close-knit group and everyone’s together.

“We all complement each other’s games and if you give us chances, all of us will score them. It was a brilliant result for us and we’ll striving to get the wins like that.

“Coming to places like this last season we never really did well so we had to come and give a statement to everyone that we mean business.

“It’s a great start but we can’t get too carried away. It’s three points and that’s put to bed now and we concentrate on Tuesday."
