Josh Sheehan enjoyed a memorable night as he helped Wales secure promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.
The Wanderers’ midfielder was again a key man in Craig Bellamy’s side which beat Iceland 4-1 to grab top spot in League B Group 4.
The result, coupled with defeat for Turkey in Montenegro, saw Wales clinch automatic promotion to League A as they continued an unbeaten start under Bellamy’s management.
Sheehan played all bar the last couple of minutes in Cardiff, where two goals from Swansea’s Liam Cullen and one apiece for Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson and Harry Wilson of Fulham saw Wales come from behind to secure a famous victory.
Sheehan had previously continued his run of starts by playing the full game and winning his 10th cap as Wales drew 0-0 in Turkey on Saturday to set up a dramatic final round of group games.
Wanderers’ wing-back Szabi Schön also returned to the international arena on Wednesday night as he came off the bench to help Hungary to a 1-1 draw with Germany as he won his ninth cap for his country, which now faces a relegation/promotion play-off in March.
Twenty-four hours earlier Northern Ireland, with Dion Charles starting, earned the point they needed in Luxembourg to secure promotion from League C as Group 3 winners.
A penalty from the Wanderers’ striker had helped clinch a 2-0 win over Belarus last Friday night to set Michael O’Neill’s side on course for top spot.
Whites’ goalkeeper Luke Southwood had been an unused substitute in both games and Wanderers’ quartet of internationals will now return to duty with the Whites on Thursday to step up preparations for Saturday’s home League One game against Blackpool.
