Boss Ian Evatt savoured a ‘brilliant feeling’ as Wanderers secured a thrilling late win, writes Pete Oliver.
A 99th-minute goal from substitute Klaidi Lolos gave the Whites a 1-0 victory over free-scoring Peterborough.
And Evatt was doubly thrilled with the outcome and the display as Wanderers belatedly but deservedly secured a fifth win in seven League One games to move within two points of the top six.
“That was a really, really good performance. I think one of our best this season so far,” said Evatt. “We created so much, passed the ball, had the ball in tight areas, and limited a really dangerous attack to very little.
“A clean sheet against Peterborough should be celebrated. We haven't kept enough of those this season. I'm delighted for the boys really. It was nothing more than we deserved today and I think everyone in the stadium could see that.
“Credit to the players, they didn't give up. They could easily have gone into their shells and felt sorry for themselves for not taking all the opportunities we created but they kept going, kept believing and we've got that moment. It doesn't matter how it happened, it just matters that the ball was in the back of the net.
“It’s a great feeling; a brilliant feeling to win late and win last-minute. But it's a much better feeling for me as a coach and manager to see the players perform like they have done today.”
Lolos followed up to score after Dion Charles’ penalty had been saved by Nicholas Bilokapic in a chaotic finish after George Johnston had been hauled to the ground to earn the spot-kick.
An inspired Bilokapic also saved the follow-up from Charles but Lolos’ first goal for Wanderers sealed a third home win of the campaign as Wanderers now hit the road for games at Stevenage and Stockport – either side of an FA Cup trip to Walsall – as they look to close in on the pla-off zone.
“We know these next two games are going to be tough, as well as the cup game added into that,” Evatt told Wanderers TV. “But if we perform like that we've not got much to worry about. That's my focus, making sure we play well as a team.
“I'm really happy tonight, not only that we’ve won the game, but that I've seen a performance that looks and resembles what we've created in the last four or five years.”
