Ian Evatt thanked his players and the fans as Wanderers hit back in style with a high five, writes Pete Oliver.
The Whites were under pressure after back-to-back home League One defeats and no home goals.
But they responded in courageous fashion to outscore Reading 5-2 on an uplifting afternoon at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
“I've loved the week,” said Evatt, who was rocked eight days earlier with a 4-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town. “The way the players have been with me this week, and the way they've been with each other, I just had a really good feeling about today.
“It's been tough and it's far from vintage us but we looked dynamic again. We looked hungry and we looked like we can create and score and that's what's been missing. We're back to what we know best and back to scoring five which is very much like us.
“I'm so pleased and happy for the players. There were some big performances out there from everybody and as I said to them ‘thank-you, thank-you for the way they've worked this week, the way they've behaved, the way they've been with me and the staff, the way they approached that game and the way they've gone and executed that game. I'm just so thankful to them.”
A Dion Charles’ first-half hat-trick on the back of a superb early free-kick from Josh Sheehan gave Wanderers the perfect start as they went on to secure a second league win.
Evatt’s men set a superb tempo from the off with the manager grateful for the help of the home fans who got behind their team to generate a fantastic atmosphere and a winning feeling.
Evatt added: “That was our responsibility, that we got them off their seats. I think we did that but the support was amazing. Personally it's been very tough for me. Sometimes you feel like you've lost everybody but that was a sign that we haven't and I haven't.
“Hearing them sing my name at the end I was emotional because this club means the world to me. We're doing the best we can and thank-you to them; thank-you for their support. I think both sides kept their side of the bargain today and they were absolutely magnificent.”
The result lifted Wanderers to 18th in the table with seven points from six games and just three points away from the top 10.
Evatt now takes his side to Arsenal for a mid-week Carabao Cup tie, with the boss looking to build on the win over Reading – topped off by Kyle Dempsey’s late fifth goal – with away league games to follow at Crawley and Northampton Town.
He told Wanderers TV: “That's a big victory for us but it's only a victory. At the same way as a defeat doesn't mean it's the end of the world, a win doesn't mean it's the start of new beginnings or we're going to suddenly fly up the table.
“It just means we've got a platform and start to build from again. We have to keep our feet on the ground and approach next week the way we did this week and if we can do that I'm confident we can start to progress and get results consistently.
“We've got a really challenging game on Wednesday but a game we can really enjoy now, knowing we've won a game in the league, and get through that hopefully unscathed and approach Crawley in a really serious manner.”
