Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Eoin Toal both gained valuable game time as they returned to action in the B Team.
The pair couldn’t prevent Matt Craddock’s side from losing 4-0 to Huddersfield Town B at Lostock.
But the duo both came through unscathed as they stepped up their comebacks from injury to edge nearer first-team contention.
Bodvarsson – who picked up a hamstring problem at Salford City in pre-season – played for around an hour.
And Toal completed 75 minutes as he continues to recover from the ankle injury that kept him out of all of the Whites’ warm-up games.
Town won the friendly with two goals in each half to hand the Whites just a second defeat of pre-season ahead of their Central League opener next Tuesday.
Former Blackburn and Millwall winger Connor Mahoney and Kyle Hudlin struck for the Terriers before the break, with Scott High and substitute Kieran Phillips – from the penalty spot – wrapping up victory after half-time.
Bodvarsson and Toal were among those to have a chance for the Whites to reduce the deficit after the break, with Nelson Khumbeni and substitute Ben Andreucci also going close.
Wanderers B: Litherland, Matheson, Conway (Inwood 80), Khumbeni, Toure, Toal (Halford 75), Hayes-Green, Pettifer (Lockett HT), Tweedley, Sithole (Bryan 70), Bodvarsson (Andreucci 60).
