International Itinerary

Josh Sheehan smiling Wales training

Wanderers have half-a-dozen players on international duty as the Whites take a break from League One action.

Ian Evatt’s men face a blank weekend after Wanderers’ scheduled trip to Cambridge United on Saturday was one of eight fixtures in the division postponed due to international calls.

All eyes will therefore be on Euro 2024 qualifiers for Wales and Northern Ireland, Under-21 qualifiers for Wales and Northern Ireland and the start of Guinea-Bissau’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Wanderers’ forward Carlos Mendes Gomes has been called by Guinea-Bissau for the first time and will be looking to help them advance from Group A of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup Finals in the African Zone (CAF).

The top team in their group, which also includes Egypt, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and Djibouti, will qualify for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States, with the runners-up going into a play-off round.

Guinea-Bissau have also qualified for a fourth successive Africa Cup of Nations Tournament, which takes place in the Ivory Coast in January.

Closer to home, Wales are still in with the chance of reaching the finals of Euro 2024 in Germany next summer, with Wanderers’ midfielder Josh Sheehan in the squad which will seal automatic qualification with wins over Armenia and leaders Turkey in Group D. A third-placed finish in the group could lead to a play-off tie in March.

Northern Ireland can no longer qualify and are re-building under Michael O’Neill, who has named the Whites’ pair of Eoin Toal and Dion Charles in his squad for their final two games in Group H.

At Under-21 level, on-loan defender Zac Ashworth is in the Wales squad hoping to progress from Group I to the finals in Slovakia in 2025.

And Conor Carty could end a superb domestic season in Ireland by helping the Republic extend their perfect start at the top of Group A.

Carty last weekend helped St Patrick’s Athletic win the FAI Cup at the end of a successful loan spell with the Dublin-based club, which will play in Europe again next season.
