Khumbeni Completes Gills Move

Nelson Khumbeni warm-up friendly

Wanderers can confirm the departure of midfielder Nelson Khumbeni to League Two side Gillingham for an undisclosed fee.

Khumbeni has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Gills to end a similar stay with the Whites.

The former Norwich City youngster joined Wanderers’ new-look B Team squad in the summer of 2022 before going on to make a senior debut off the bench in a Carabao Cup win over Salford City two months later.

The 22-year-old featured once more at first-team level with a goal-scoring appearance as a substitute in an 8-1 win over Manchester United’s U21s in an EFL Cup tie in September, 2023.

Having featured regularly in the Wanderers’ B Team, Khumbeni then moved out on loan to AFC Fylde to get an extended run of first-team games before stepping up into the EFL with a successful loan spell at Morecambe in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

The central midfielder spent the first half of the current campaign gaining further valuable senior experience on loan at Accrington Stanley where he made 18 League Two appearances before signing off with a start in the FA Cup third round at Liverpool last weekend.

The move to Gillingham now allows Khumbeni the chance to progress his career in the EFL after being signed by former Accrington manager John Coleman.

His departure follows Conor Carty’s switch to St Patrick’s Athletic earlier this week as Wanderers allow young players not quite ready for the first team at the Toughsheet Community Stadium to continue their development and livelihoods elsewhere.

We wish Nelson all the best in his future career and thank him for his contribution during his time with Wanderers.
