Match Preview | Charlton Athletic v Wanderers

Charlton Preview

Wanderers are back on the road this weekend as they travel to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic who are under the management of Nathan Jones in his first full season in charge of the London outfit.

Ian Evatt's side will look to keep their unbeaten run to the start of the season going after a goalless draw with Wrexham last weekend.

The Valley is a happy hunting ground for Wanderers who have won in their last three visits including a 4-1 victory back in 2021 featuring a Kieran Lee brace.

The Whites will be backed by over 1,000 supporters on Saturday as Wanderers hunt for their second away win of the season in as many games.

Manager quotes

Ian Evatt: "I think they are going to be in the top six this season. Nathan is a good, experienced manager and knows what it takes to win. I see an improved team and it is going to be a challenge, it always is there.

"We have a pretty good record there, the pitch and environment suits us well. Charlton as a football club is a great marker and some perspective about our situation.

"But for us, being close to promotion in the last two years and only being back at this level for four years, we should really look at them and give ourselves some perspective.

Charlton Manager Nathan Jones: "They've (Wanderers) got real continuity, I think their manager's been there from anything up to five years. Been promoted, done well, steadied the ship initially and got them promoted.

"They're a very well coached, real good side with good players and have signed good players so you would expect them to be up there.

"This is another test, a different test but we have to make sure we're the best version of ourselves and if we're the best version of ourselves then that's all I can ask for and that's what I want from us."

Team news

No fresh injury worries for Wanderers following on from their draw at home to Wrexham last Sunday.

There will be no injured players returning to the squad but Gethin Jones and Randell Williams are advancing in their recoveries from their respective knocks.

Six first team players featured in Wanderers B Team's 5-0 win over Notts County. Luke Southwood completed 90 minutes with Chris Forino, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Jay Matete, Aaron Morley and Kyle Dempsey playing 45 minutes.

Charlton suffered a blow last weekend when defender Josh Edwards was stretchered off in their victory over Leyton Orient with a challenge to the ankle. The Scotsman will face weeks on the sidelines.

Edwards was signed this summer for competition with young defender Thierry Small, who will now most likely take up that position on the left for Saturday's hosts.

The Addicks sold young defender Luca Ness to Notts County on Thursday due to limited opportunities in Nathan Jones' side.
