The B Team will be looking to keep alive their outside chances of qualification when they continue their unbeaten Central League Cup campaign at Rotherham tomorrow.
The Whites have drawn their opening two games – against the current top two in the table – in Group A of the competition.
With two matches to go, Andy Taylor’s side could draw level on points with Stockport County Reserves and Huddersfield Town B.
However, the Wanderers’ youngsters would need to gain seven goals on County to top the group on goal difference and go through to the quarter-finals.
“We’re a bit stretched at the moment,” said B Team boss Taylor. “We’ve got lots of lads out on loan but that’s what we want at this stage of the season to get them into first-team football.
“It means more of the U18s getting exposure at this level but, again, that’s good for their development and it will be another good test for us.”
Rotherham are currently bottom of the group with one draw and two defeats from their opening three fixtures.
Tuesday’s fixture in south Yorkshire (KO 1pm) is being played behind closed doors.
