New signing Szabolcs Schön admits joining Wanderers is a dream move as he prepares for life in the EFL, writes Pete Oliver.
Schön becomes the Whites’ fifth recruit of the summer after joining Wanderers from Hungarian top-flight club Fehervar.
The 23-year-old wing-back has agreed an initial three-year deal at the Toughsheet Community Stadium – subject to international clearance – and can’t wait to become part of the Wanderers’ story.
“It's a pleasure to be here,” said Schön. “I don't have to talk a lot about this club's past because everyone knows this club is really big and I can't wait to meet the players and the fans in the stadium.
“It's a really beautiful stadium and I can't wait for the first game at home. I think every kid’s dream is to play in front of so many fans. For me English football means a lot so I'm happy to be here.
“Of course, when I signed here I checked the club and I checked the players so I'm really into it. I hope I can help the team go back in the right way. Again, I'm really happy to be here.”
Wanderers’ move for Schön follows a change in criteria for making overseas signing as the Whites spread the net for the right kind of talent.
The left-sided player – whose pace, creativity and ability to go past players will add greatly to Wanderers’ left-sided options – ticks all the boxes required with an impressive pedigree that includes a youth spell with Ajax, a season in the MLS with FC Dallas and two stints in the top level in his home country.
He arrives having helped Fehervar reach the third qualifying round of this seasons' Europa Conference League and with eight full international caps to his name.
Two of those came in the finals of the delayed European 2020 Championships and he hopes the platform of performing well in League One with Ian Evatt’s men will help him re-ignite his international ambitions and follow in the footsteps of former Wanderers’ and Hungary goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.
“I spoke with him yesterday,” added Schön, who takes squad number 23. “He congratulated me and it means a lot to me to be the second Hungary player at this club.
“Playing in the European Championships is what I'm really proud of in my career and I think the biggest one. I just want to keep pushing and I want to get back into that kind of way so I can't wait to get back to work.
“Hungary had an okay Euros (in 2024) and were unlucky not to get through from the group stage and that was a decision made by me and my agent also to come here to get back in the national team.”
