Thomason | I Wanted To Show Loyalty

George Thomason contract

Midfielder George Thomason is convinced he’s in the right place after signing a new long-term contract with Wanderers, writes Pete Oliver.

Thomason could have ended his three-and-a-half-year stay with the Whites to move to a Championship club following a major offer made to Wanderers.

Instead, the 22-year-old opted to stay at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and has been rewarded with a new deal running until June, 2027 after further committing himself to the journey Wanderers are on under boss Ian Evatt.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract to stay for longer and I’m grateful to the club and the manager,” said Thomason.

“I just wanted to show loyalty to the manager who had given me my breakthrough and opportunity here and to continue my development at this club because I feel that’s been a really positive thing since I have been here.”

Thomason follows George Johnston, Gethin Jones, Kyle Dempsey, Josh Sheehan and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson in agreeing new contracts with Wanderers this summer.

And the former Longridge Town youngster – who has developed into a key member of Evatt’s squad since helping Wanderers up from League Two in 2021 – believes he will play higher than League One with the Whites as part of the current group.

“I don’t want to sound like a broken record but the main factors are that the club is in such a positive direction,” added Thomason after penning the new deal to replace an existing contract due to expire in 2025 with a potential 12-month option.

“The squad right now is so competitive and at a really high standard – one of the highest standards since I’ve been here and I think we’ve got a really good chance of going up ourselves.

“It’s a special squad, a special management and a special group and it would fill me with a lot of pride and happiness if I could say I got promoted to the Championship with this club.

“It’s early days in this season but I fully believe in myself and my team-mates that we’ll get there together.”
