Women's Preview | Wanderers v Accrington Stanley

women's team

For the second time in a matter of days, Bolton Wanderers Women take on Accrington Stanley Women - this time in a league encounter in a top-of-the-table clash at Victory Park.

Wanderers head into this game knowing victory secures the Division One North title in a game against their divisional rivals at the home of Chorley FC.

The Whites come into Sunday's game having secured their first trophy under club operations following their 5-1 Challenge Cup victory over Stanley on Thursday evening.

Goals from Lily Barnes and Grace Grundy, as well as a Faye Knox hat-trick, sealed an emphatic victory in front of over 1,000 supporters at the County Ground.

With one trophy now in the bag, the attention of Myles Smith's side turns back to league action knowing a win in the league will claim promotion to Tier 5 of the Women's pyramid. A draw or defeat for Wanderers at Chorley means the title race moves into the last game of the season against Preston North End.

But in front of them is a strong Stanley side that will want to make amends following the cup defeat on Thursday, and a team that has only suffered one defeat all season in the league - that coming against Wanderers back in December - and still carry title aspirations of their own.

They secured their place in the final of the Alliance Design and Print Cup following their Semi-Final success over FC United last Sunday, and despite having a number of games in hand their league form has remained consistent - picking up nine straight wins since the 5-2 defeat to the Whites last year and emphasising the task ahead of the Whites on Sunday.

Myles Smith, Women's Manager, said: "What this group has done over the course of the season is that they've shown that when they need to dial in and focus - they've very good at doing that.

"We saw that on Thursday and seen it in previous games and I've no doubt that they will be wanting to do the same again this weekend.

"The group know that despite the celebrations and the trophy win on Thursday, the main focus is the league and on promotion. We know that we haven't won it and reminded them that we haven't achieved anything yet - and we have one, maybe two, games left to do that.

"But I'm confident in this group and confident that they are dialled in and they will do as much as they can to get the job done."

As confirmed on Friday, the fixture tomorrow takes place at Chorley FC's Victory Park, kick-off 2pm. As always, entry into the game is free and we'd love to see as many supporters as we can showing their support once more.
