Women's Report | Wanderers 10-3 Tranmere Rovers

match report

In an afternoon of attacking football, Wanderers convincingly beat Tranmere Rovers 10-3 - a team from the league above - to progress in style in the Alliance Print and Design Cup.

Wanderers headed into this fixture on the back of a win over Radcliffe last time out, and made two changes to that starting side - welcoming back captain Katie Holt to the back-line, as well as handing Neishai Gordon her first start in a Bolton shirt.

Taking place at Chorley FC's Victory Park, this was a game that hung firmly in the balance at 3-3 heading into the second half, but Wanderers scored seven unanswered goals - with Jess Lightfoot grabbing five during the afternoon - to assert their dominance and progress into the next round.

Myles Smith's side went in search of goals from the first minute, and had their opener when Eboni Bradshaw put Wanderers ahead just six minutes in.

After a clever pass from Charlotte Tyers played her into space down the left flank, Eboni's square pass in-towards Lightfoot was cut out and deflected back into her path, allowing her to finish emphatically from the edge of the area.

Just five minutes later and Wanderers had doubled their lead through Neishai Gordon. The forward was determined in beating three defenders on her way into the Tranmere penalty area, before applying a cool finish past Mangan to hand the Whites early control.

The away side responded, however, and Annabelle White was forced into action when making a superb save at full stretch to deny Anya McCready from distance. But Rovers continued to force themselves back into the game, and McCready reduced the deficit with a stunning 30-yard shot that flew into the top corner - offering a gentle reminder to Wanderers of the threat they pose.

Wanderers had a narrow escape shortly after when a long throw-in caused chaos in their own box, but Ellie Howard headed over from close range.

However, Tranmere would not be denied for long. In the 23rd minute, a deflected free-kick from Louisa Murphy wrong-footed White and looped into the net to level the score at 2-2.

But as has been the case all season when facing adversity, Wanderers responded almost instantly. Within a minute, Faye Knox broke down the right-hand side and delivered a precise cross for Lightfoot, who finished first time to restore the Whites' lead.

But the rollercoaster of a first half continued as Tranmere equalised just a minute later when a low cross caused confusion, resulting in an own goal - making it 3-3.

Before the half-time whistle, both sides had chances to take the lead. Shaney Bond was thwarted by a crucial save from White, before Bradshaw - who was a threat all afternoon - found Gordon inside the area for a tap-in but a big block from Lindsey Smith denied her to keep the score level at the break.

Wanderers emerged from the dressing room with renewed energy along with the introduction of Emme Shone in place of Maisy Mitchell in the middle of the park.

Inside the opening minute, Wanderers had Eleanor Seals to thank for a superb defensive read to deny Amy Shannon a goal after a cross had found her at the far post, but the Whites midfielder made her way back to her own goal-line to make a vital clearance.

Having survived the early danger, the Whites went in search of more and within seven minutes of the second half starting, they had restored the lead with Bradshaw's second.

A Charlotte Tyers corner went through a number of bodies inside the crowded penalty area, and Eboni applied the simple finish at the far post.

This gave the Whites the early boost they needed and four minutes later, after Bradshaw had won the ball high up the pitch, Lightfoot - Wanderers' top scorer this campaign - shown all in attendance why that is the case with a classy, drilled finish into the bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the area, giving Mangan no chance.

Lightfoot went close to her hat-trick shortly after scoring when being picked out brilliantly by Caitlin Clarke with a threaded pass through the lines. The forward got her shot away after gliding down-field, an effort that took a slight touch on the way through, just sending it wide of the far post.

But in a dominating second half display, Wanderers added another shortly after when Faye Knox got in on the act when finishing emphatically into the top corner after being played through down the right-hand side.

Within a minute of Knox's goal, Wanderers scored again with arguably the move of the match. Lovely interplay between Gordon and Knox down the right-hand side allowed Faye to pull the ball back expertly for Lightfoot to apply a deft finish past Mangan to make it 7-3.

As the match approached its final moments, the scoring frenzy continued with Lightfoot netting her fourth from close range after a scramble from a corner in the 81st minute to make it eight.

With a commanding lead, Wanderers started to make changes and emphasised their strength in depth with the likes of Nia Wharton, Millie Smith and Lily Barnes - the latter returning from injury - all getting vital minutes on the pitch and continuing the Whites' intensity off the bench.

As the game approached stoppage time, Wanderers still had time to add two more goals.

First, Emme Shone - introduced at half-time and impressed throughout - was played through on-goal with a defence splitting pass to apply a confident finish to make it nine.

But Wanderers had one more goal in them, and it was Lightfoot - who was brilliant in a non-stop performance leading the line - who rounded off proceedings.

In typical Jess fashion, the forward capitalised on a loose back-pass towards the Tranmere 'keeper to intercept, create the space and apply a simple a finish to seal victory in style.

It was an outstanding display from Myles Smith's side against a side they had failed to beat this season in both pre-season and FA Cup last month.

With a week off next weekend, Wanderers can now enjoy time to recover and put in more hard yards on the training field ahead of their next league action - against Radcliffe on the 10th November at the Dreasm2Reality Stadium.
